Many people use the start of the new year as an opportunity to set goals and make changes in their lives, and often decluttering their house is a common resolution! Starting fresh in the new year has its benefits. By getting a head start on spring cleaning and decluttering your home at the beginning of the 2023, you can start off the new year with a sense of renewed energy and organization. Not only are you making space for new things that you may acquire in the year ahead, but you’re also reaping the mental and emotional benefits of ridding your house of clutter including reduced stress and increased happiness. At Top to Bottom, we believe one of the most therapeutic ways to start your 2023 off right is to clean and organize your home!
Here are a few tips you can use to declutter your home this year:
Start with one room at a time. Decluttering your entire house doesn’t seem like such a daunting task if you tackle it one room at a time. Start with your most cluttered room and work your way through your home.
Create a schedule. Set aside a specific time each day or week this month to work on cleaning and decluttering your space. Hold yourself accountable and stick to your schedule!
Implement the “Three Box Method” for organizing your home. As you’re going through your house, designate three boxes or bags to sort through items in each room. Each box should be labeled “Keep”, “Donate”, and “Throw Away”. The idea is to go through each item in the room, one by one, and decide which box it belongs in using the following guidelines.
Keep: Items that you use and love, that are in good condition, and that have a designated place in your home.
Donate: Items that are in good condition but that you no longer need or use, and that can be donated to a charity or someone in need.
Throw Away: Items that are broken, worn out, or no longer useful, and that should be thrown away.
The Three Box Method is a simple and effective way to declutter a room or space quickly and efficiently. It helps you to be more ruthless in getting rid of items that you no longer need and also makes it easy to know where to put the items you are keeping.
Use the “one in, one out” rule. For every new item that comes into your home, get rid of one item that you no longer need. This helps to ensure that you are not accumulating unnecessary clutter that you’ll have to clear out later!
Find a dedicated space for everything. Make sure every item that you keep has a designated space. This helps you to maintain cleanliness, prevent clutter from piling up in your drawers or on your countertops, and keep track of where everything is in your home.
Be critical with yourself. As you are going through your items, be honest with yourself about which items you truly need and which items can be donated, sold, or thrown away. If the item doesn’t make you happy, do you truly need it? Pay attention to your linen closet, specifically old towels, blankets, or bedding that take up a great deal of storage space. If you don’t use them, it might be time to say goodbye.
Use the closet clothes hanger technique. As you’re beginning your decluttering process, turn all your clothes hangers in your closet around so that the hangers face back-to-front. For the next few weeks, after you wear an item of clothing, return it to the closet with the hanger facing the correct way. At the end of the month, pay attention to the hangers that have been left unturned. If you haven’t touched several items of clothing after a month or so, it may be time to donate those items.
Consider a minimalist approach. As you are decluttering, it’s easy to become overwhelmed with the amount of “stuff” you have accumulated over the years. Adopt a minimalist mindset at the beginning of this process. Keep in mind that the more you have, the more you have to clean! Try to only keep the items that you truly need and love. Don’t waste valuable storage space on items that don’t bring you joy.
Take before and after pictures of various rooms. If you can see before and after photos of the work that you have done, it can inspire you to keep going! Before you start organizing each room, take a moment to snap a quick photo. Once you’ve finished cleaning and decluttering that area, take an after shot. Allowing yourself to see what you’ve accomplished in a short period of time is often the inspiration you need to keep going!
Reward yourself. As the month ends and your decluttering process comes to a close, make sure to take the time to reward yourself for your hard work. Decluttering your home is hard work, but when the work is done you can sit back, relax, and enjoy your fresh, clean space!
